In Sligo, We are constantly being encouraged to shop locally. The huge influx of shoppers going across the border to Enniskillen to avail of the great savings is having a crippling effect on many of the businesses around the town and county.
We all know that it is important to support local businesses, but in these times it is not always possible for everyone. Many people have also had to sacrifice their leisure activities and have stopped eating out.
Sligo woman Sile Quinlan, like many others saw this happening and decided to get the ball rolling with an idea that had been in the back of her mind for many years.
The result was the "Out 4 Less" discount voucher booklet which provides massive savings for the customer in Sligo town and county. The book costs €39.99 €25.00, contains discount vouchers for 55 businesses in Sligo providing customers with over €1300 worth of potential savings for 2010. Sile came up with the idea whilst in Australia, when she noticed that there it was commonplace for most people to use discount coupons. This too is the case in the U.S.
In Ireland however, Sile observed that a lot of people would not be seen to use a discount voucher, even if it meant savings for them. When she decided to go back to work after taking a career break following the birth of her first child, she decided she wanted the flexibility of being self-employed. With the financial changes that had taken place in the country in recent years, she decided what better time to make her an idea a reality. The book would not only encourage the people of Sligo to shop locally but it would actually reward them for doing so by offering them great savings. The book is a win-win idea for all people involved. For the customer, it means great savings and for the business it means new customers and also allows them to reward and keep their existing customers by offering them money off.
One of the biggest victims of the recession has been leisure time. People have had to give up eating out or having wine with dinner to save on a taxi, the booklet allows people to treat themselves as they will be able to do so for €20 less than before. Sile, who has a Masters in Marketing Management from the Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School, spent many months meeting up with every single business in the book and coming up with agreements.
She says the response she received from the businesses was very positive and it was with great faith they got on board with her, given she had no prototype to show them at the time and it was the first year of the venture. It is safe to say they would be pleased with the results of Sile's labour. The finished product is a sleek and high quality, compact book. The book is not just restricted to those living in Sligo town either. Sile made sure that she included a broad variety of businesses in the book so whether you are from Grange, Tubbercurry, Strandhill, Rosses Point, Ballymote - anywhere within the county.
The booklet is valid for the whole of 2010 and can be purchased on the website, www.out4less.ie or from the Liber and Booknest book shops. The Out 4 less book has a fantastic selection of vouchers for restaurants and cafes, takeaways, hair and beauty salons, spas as well as a whole range of leisure activities.
Each company offered savings at a minimum of €20, but in some cases you will save much more than that. For example, Enniscrone and Strandhill Golf Clubs are offering two round of golf for the price of one.
Bistro Bianconi, Bella Vista Bar and Restaurant Strandhill, Markree Castle and Kings Chinese Restaurant are just four of the great venues offering 20 euro or more worth of savings. There are also no less than 15 well known hair and beauty salons as well as well as golf, horse riding, surf and cinema vouchers and for the kids, Happy Days Adventure Play Centre are offering three "two for the price of one" vouchers.
The days of being too shy to present a discount voucher are long gone, and as they should be. This is a way for people to avoid having to sacrifice their leisure time, whether it be a romantic meal, a round of golf, a family get together or simply lunch or a takeaway with friends. It also allows people to still be able to pamper themselves every once in a while and get that facial or maybe a spray tan for a special night out. These things are even more important now than they ever were, because of the stress many people now face in their everyday life, we need a treat every once in a while.
The businesses involved are offering these discounts exclusively to Out 4 Less and want to encourage business in the town and surrounding areas. There are a limited number of these books available to be purchased from the website www.out4less.ie, the Liber Bookshop or the Booknest and would make a beneficial and long lasting Christmas gift. Maybe the person who you buy it for will even treat you to dinner, after all, they'll be able to afford it.
